FAQs.

How do I apply for Pattern and Push?

Navigate to this page, read the instructions and submit your audition demo by filling out our application form.

I don’t have a song or video, does it matter?

We’re not looking for perfect, we’re looking for talent! It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a proper showreel or track, just do a selfie video and spit or sing a verse or two. This is enough.

How does the competition work?

PATTERN Masterclasses.
Selected applicants will enter our masterclass stage. Divided into teams you will work with Coco and Seppy and other music industry professionals to improve your skills and PATTERN up your lyrics. Over a 4 week period you will create positive verses with your mentors to submit to our panel of judges for selection.

Studio Recording.
8 successful competitors will go through to the recording stage. Here you will step into the professional studio environment to write, develop and record a track with your mentor.

PUSH Live Event
Perform your track live at Hope Works during our final knockout event alongside Coco, Seppy and guests. Our panel of judges will select the winner of this year’s Pattern and Push.

What happens in the masterclasses?

Due to COVID 19 restrictions, our Masterclasses sessions will take place via Zoom. These will take the form of both group sessions and 1-2-1 sessions where you will receive guidance and tips from singers and rappers as well as music industry insights from a variety of music industry professionals.

When will the masterclasses, studio recording and event take place?

Our Masterclass sessions will start week commencing 11th January 2021 and run for the remainder of January, studio sessions will commence in February and our live event will be mid March. Exact dates will be clarified following our submission deadline on 28th December 2020.

Can I record my own track in the studio?

If you already have a piece that you’ve written, providing it adheres to our positive messaging guidelines and it is agreed with your team leader then absolutely!

When do I find out if I’ve been selected?

Auditions close on 28th December 2020, we will then be making selections soon after and announcing our shortlist on 5th January 2021.

What will I win?

If you are lucky enough to win the competition you will have the opportunity to record your own track and professional music video. Pattern and Push, Hope Works, Coco, Seppy and our partners will promote your video through our channels. Good luck!

What do we mean by positive messaging and why is it important?

Pattern and Push was formed to promote music as a force for good. Life is hard for everyone right now and we want this project to take you away from your negative thoughts, be an escape from the bad stuff and to guide you in a positive direction. We understand that this doesn’t come naturally for everyone and for some this is the toughest part. To help you along, we’ve come up with an explanation of what we mean by positive lyrics:

Do:

  • We don’t just mean the obvious stuff about love and happiness (of course these are welcome), we also want you to be reflective and tell us your story!

  • You can talk about your pains, challenges in life and worries if you wish, but instead focus on perhaps how this has made you stronger, how you may have changed (or are trying to change) for the better. You could perhaps write about how you’ve grown as a person or learnt to live or cope with your challenges, or if you aren’t there yet then talk about your hopes for the future.

  • If this doesn’t work for you, write as though you were someone else – even adopt and alter ego like a superhero!

Don’t:

  • Glorify violence or drugs.

  • Talk about themes that may be considered, racist, sexist of offensive to any other groups.
